In and around Ramsgate

 

Ramsgate and the surrounding areas have a wide variety of places to go and things to do to keep you busy during your stay at Redcot House.

We've included just a few ideas on this page and when you arrive at Redcot House, you'll find more information and of course, feel free to ask us as well.

 

You can also learn more about Thanet's  places and events by going to www.visitthanet.co.uk  and Ramsgate's Visitor Information Point is on Harbour Parade, opposite the Maritime Museum and is open from 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday. 

 

When you arrive, you can also learn more about the town, the surrounding area and what to do by meeting a Kent Greeter. It's totally FREE and run by volunteers who are passionate about our town and want to share their expert knowledge with you!

 

Ramsgate town - A 15 minute stroll along the seafront from Redcot House will take you into the town centre, with a mixture of High Street shops and independent retailers, as well as a cosmopolitan array of cafes, bars and restaurants, many with fantastic views across the Royal Harbour Marina.

 

King George VI Park – 3 minutes’ walk from Redcot House, the park is famous for wild green Parakeets. You can also see the amazing Italianate greenhouse, pictured above and recently restored, originally part of East Cliff Lodge.

 

Ramsgate beaches – award winning beaches a few minutes walk away.

 

Royal Marina – the UK’s only Royal Harbour Marina, steeped in history and a great place to people watch outside one of the many cafes and bars, explore some interesting shops in the old boat arches or visit the 18th century sailor’s Church.

 

The Grange – designed and built by Augustus Pugin as his family home, now a Landmark Trust property with a small museum open on Wednesdays from 2pm – 4pm. AWN Pugin was responsible for the interiors of the Houses of Parliament and you can see the impact he had on Ramsgate on a walking trail, visiting 29 sites around the town.

 

The Granville Theatre & Cinema – a few minutes walk from Redcot House and home to a wide range of shows, events and the latest Hollywood films. We let you know what’s on during your stay, click here before you book or check out the posters on your way into Ramsgate town.

 

Costumed walks - throughout July and August you can join guided walks around the town and meet famous characters from the past. 

 

The Great Wall of Ramsgate - 100 large scale pieces of artwork by local artists, celebrating the past, present and future of Ramsgate.

 

Maritime museum - situated on Ramsgates harbour in an old Clock House. 

 

Boat trips - take a boat trip from the harbour to watch the local seals, cruise along the coast or even visit Europes largest off-shore wind farm. Check the following sites for details of trips available - Horizon Sea Safaris or Sea Searcher Boat Trips.

 

Viking Ship 'Hugin' - overlooking Pegwell Bay, a replica of the Viking ship which sailed from Denmark to Thanet in 1949 commemorating the 1500 year anniversary of the invasion of Britain.

Further afield 

 

Broadstairs – a beautiful 25 minute walk from Redcot House, either along the top of the white cliffs or the beach. Charming Dickensian town with a lovely sandy bay and famous Morelli’s Ice cream Parlour. It also has the smallest cinema still operating in the UK.

 

Margate – 10 minutes by car or a stunning 2 1/2 hour beach walk. Now home to the long awaited Turner Contemporary gallery, right on the harbour. Visit the old town for a selection of small shops, cafes and galleries and also worth hunting out is the amazing underground Shell Grotto, Scotts Emporium and Junk Deluxe, within Scotts.

 

Deal – Picturesque seaside town with a pier, a pebble beach scattered with fishing boats and an English Heritage castle (CT14 6JD). Plenty of pubs and cafes and for a special meal, try Dunkerleys Seafood restaurant.

 

Canterbury – 18 miles by road or an easy bus or train ride away (CT1 1BW). A UNESCO City, home to the amazing Cathedral, narrow cobbled streets, river trips, museums, some excellent shopping and lots of eating options. And for theatre lovers, the brand new Marlowe Theatre is now open and has a programme of major shows and events. 

 

St Margaret’s Bay – between Deal and Dover, home to the National Trust operated South Foreland lighthouse. From the lighthouse, there's a stunning cliff top walk to the Port of Dover. A welcome sight after about an hour’s walk is the National Trust White Cliffs Cafe.

 

Whitstable - recently voted to have the most interesting High Street in the UK, about 30 minutes by car and famous for it's locally caught oysters (CT5 1BU).

 

Quex Park House, Garden and Museum - a beautiful regency home and gardens home to the Powell-Cotton family and a fascinating collection of treasures. There's also a farm shop, deli and cafe, plus it's the location of many events and concerts throughout the year.

 

 

Dover – around 18 miles by road and your starting point for a day trip to France. If you want help with making a ferry booking, please let us know. Also home to the English Heritage run Dover Castle, and just beyond Dover is Samphire Hoe (CT16 1HU), a nature reserve created by earth excavated from the Channel Tunnel.

 

Howletts Wild Animal Park – this side of Canterbury and home to Gorillas, Elephants, Lions, Tigers, Rhino and much more (CT4 5EL).

 

Walmer Castle  - an English Heritage run Tudor castle, formally the residence of the Duke of Wellington and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

 

Faversham - lovely market town and home to Shepherd Neame, Britains oldest brewer, who run tours of their brewery most days. Some interesting antique shops can also be found next to an equally interesting boat yard!

 

Sandwich - very quaint town with an attractive quay and the famous Royal St Georges Golf Course.

 

Manston Spitfire Museum - 10 minutes by car, fascinating musuem including a real life Spitfire.

 

Helicopter tours - see the famous White Cliffs and the coast of Thanet from the air.
